FOCUS ON STUDENT THINKING: ENGAGE & REFLECT (FOSTER)

The Focus On Student Thinking: Engage & Reflect (FOSTER) program continues on for it's second year! This is a virtual Zoom series for K-12 mathematics teachers where we can focus on student thinking  and reflect on what learning is like for students.

As we reflect, we will also deepen your understanding of mathematics and engage with peers to unpack the teaching of mathematics. Between each session we will share opportunities for you to stay connected with fellow teachers on "tasks to try" before the next session. All activities will be led by Deb Stetson and Sayonita Ghosh Hajra.

Here are the topics we will be covering at each session:

  • Experience inclusion activities & build community

  • Problem solving, engaging in discourse, and question-posing

  • Open exploration and identify questions to extend thinking

  • Explore different technology & tools

Teaser for November 30

"A Parable of the Polygons"

Dive into an interactive blog activity created by Nicky Case and Vi Hart, A Parable of Polygons. Nicky and Vi have us explore a parable where we can learn something about how a small bias can impact the make-up of neighborhoods. They used mathematics and some coding to create an interactive blog activity that allows us to use mathematical shapes to explore how small things can create systemic problems, and ways small changes make a big difference in undoing those problems. Deb and Sayonita are excited to explore this with our FOSTER peeps!
