FOCUS ON STUDENT THINKING: ENGAGE & REFLECT (FOSTER)
This is a new virtual Zoom series for K-12 mathematics teachers where we can reflect on what learning was like last year. With a focus on student thinking, we will ask ourselves — "What is worth keeping?”
As we reflect, we will also deepen your understanding of mathematics and engage with peers to unpack the teaching of mathematics. Between each session we will share opportunities for you to stay connected with fellow teachers on "tasks to try" before the next session. All activities will be led by Deb Stetson and Sayonita Ghosh Hajra.
Here are the topics we will be covering at each session:
Experience inclusion activities & build community
Problem solving, engaging in discourse, and question-posing
Open exploration and identify questions to extend thinking
Explore different technology & tools

The Challenge: Pass through every square with one spaghetti noodle, making sure to always:
Move to an adjacent square that is above, below, to the right or left of the square
Choose the square with the smallest value, when there is a choice
Only move through open squares that haven’t been passed through before
Check out what we've worked on so far!
We used Mathigon Polypad as a tool to explore an open-ended task about minimizing perimeter. We displayed everyone's learnings in a "knowledge feed" and we reflected on what made it a low-floor task.
We explored a counting task about diagonals of ever-enlarging squares, and identified questions for future exploration and possible extensions.
We explored a sorting problem that had us searching for patterns, and then challenged our thinking as we learned more.
